Welcome back to 30 Days to Better Email. I hope you’ve been learning a ton, and you’re able to use the knowledge gained to become better email marketers.
Today we’re going to talk about Subject Lines.
Subject lines are your attention grabbers.
However, something can be even more attention-grabbing than the Subject Line, and that is your sender name. We all have brands we love, and often we’ll open their emails because we want to see what’s new with them.
But for the brands that aren’t quite there yet, or if you’re trying to get a bigger chunk of your audience engaged, then listen up.
There has been a lot of digital ink spilled about subject lines. I don’t think I need to rewrite that stuff. The main point I want to make is to tease your offer.
Maybe don’t be as blatant about it as Shawn the Sheep.
The tone you want to shoot for is more like, come hither.
That’s more like it.
Above that, here are a few “Rules.” I put rules in quotes because, in email, there are no actual rules beyond the spam laws.
Be a marketer and break the rules if it makes sense.
- Keep it Short and Vague
- Because you’re shooting to pique your subscriber’s attention, and you don’t do that with a long sentence.

- Don’t Overdo Personalization
- “FirstName, Today’s your Lucky Day” – once a year is plenty.

- Test
- If you have a BIG LIST, test 3-4 subjects; if you have a smaller list, test two.

- Use a Great Subject for a Great Offer
Disappointment in email marketing is a cardinal sin. Don’t do it.
- Write 10-30 Subject Lines
Use a Subject Line generator to get a lot of ideas then pick your favorites.
Please remember, developing a relationship in email can take time. Don’t try to go too fast for a great open rate; it will backfire.
Take all this to heart and you’ll be well on your way to Better Email.
